On the first day of the 2009 Grand Taiko Concert, Kaminari Taiko welcomed the Consul-General of Japan in Houston, Tsutomu Osawa, onstage as our special guest. The Consul-General presented Kaminari Taiko with the Consul-General's Special Award in recognition of Kaminari's service in promoting Japanese culture in the United States. The award reads (in translation), "The Consul-General of Japan extends his deepest regards to Kaminari Taiko in recognition of their distinguished service in contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States of America. Tsutomu Osawa, Consul-General of Japan at Houston"
